In late 1926, a month or so prior to his arrest, he was at work on a long essay about the Italian South, ‘Some Aspects on the Southern Question’. The piece was never completed; it was rudely interrupted; and while there’s a lot left dangling, there’s plenty for us still to glean. It’s important for uniting workers with peasants andf oppressed nationalities.

A DUTY TO ONE’S SELF; African philosophical values of harmony and vitality have much to offer our thinking about what we owe to ourselves. By Thaddeus Metzis, research professor of philosophy at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. …

“The South African theologian Desmond Tutu has provided a specific interpretation of harmonizing with others within an ubuntu ethical framework. The word ‘ubuntu’ means humanness, and in his book No Future Without Forgiveness (1999), Tutu says this of its understanding by indigenous Southern Africans:

“Ubuntu … speaks of the very essence of being human. When we want to give high praise to someone we say, ‘Yu, u nobuntu’; ‘Hey, he or she has ubuntu.’ This means they are generous, hospitable, friendly, caring, and compassionate … It is not ‘I think therefore I am.’ It says rather: ‘I am human because I belong.’ I participate, I share … Harmony, friendliness, community are great goods.
